hmmm all of the anticipated RELIGIOUS FUROR over the author was really for naught. The movie had some issues, but thats my take on it. I thought "Lyra" the little girl who knows how to read the compass, was totally un-lovable and will only be remembered as a damn BRAT!! SHe talks back to every authority figure throughout the movie, and it makes you wonder why some of the characters risk their lives for her in the first place. Nicole Kidman was GREAT...I like her as an EVIL BITCH! Mr. Craig (the new bond) was in the movie for a minute! I got some of the religious dogma undertones, but I pretty much could have said the same things about the government. Subtleties are abound, but this adaptation really is something to behold in the special effects. I really wish they would have come up with another name for the animal creatures that accompany you from the time you are born. The author named them demons, and that in itself was a subtle hint I grasped right away. Ok it gets a 2!! and thats because it wasn't as good as any of the Tolkien productions, nor even Narnia. I at least liked the kids in Narnia, I would say it wasnt even close to any Harry Potter adaptation either. hmmmm yep 2 is about it.
The atheist aspect seems to be abuzz amongst Christians I know. I have no reason to be interested in this movie, but not for religious reasons. It just doesn't seem like my sort of movie.
